TEACHING ENGLISH IN THE 21ST CENTURY

Abstract

The current status of English as a global language and the shift in the approach to English language teaching has made it mandatory for all students from various disciplines to undergo communication skill classes in order to learn communicative techniques, specialized vocabulary and how to use English appropriately in different contexts. Communication skills in English is a necessity if students will interact, collaborate and make meaningful contributions in their area of expertise as members of a global community. English having taken the role of a lingua franca in the world has become a crucial language that must be acquired by all. English researchers are expected to key into these factors to motivate and drive students to learn more. No doubt the role of the English teacher is now more demanding, in order to prepare students to be productive in this dispensation, the teacher has to be a lifelong learner, ready to adapt to technological changes. The teacher must learn to work with and guide students rather than make them memorize information (www.safsams.com). The era of the drill and practice of English language structures are over. The teacher must facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity as a member of a global community; a community with English users who have varying linguistic backgrounds and cultures, using language in a wide range of fields. The teacher must be proficient in the use of the latest classroom technological gadgets and aware of the career opportunity that will be available in the years to come for the students.
