COMPARATIVE EFFECT OF EXPLICIT GRAMMAR INSTRUCTION ON ADJECTIVE CONSTRUCTIONS OF SCIENCE AND ARTS SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN MAKURDI

Abstract
The study compared adjectival constructions of science and arts secondary school students in Makurdi. Quasi-experimental research design using experimental and control groups is employed for the study, which has two objectives, questions and hypotheses. Using purposive sampling technique. A sample size of 52 is drawn from study population of 2538 students. The data collection instrument, tagged Test on Use of English Adjectives in Comparative Constructions (TUEACC) was validated and trial-tested, yielding reliability Cronbach alpha value coefficient of 0.87. Mean and standard deviation are used to answer the research questions and independent t- test is used to test the research hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance .The main finding is that a significant difference exists between arts and science students in favour of science students in both formation and use of comparative forms of adjectives in English. It is recommended that teachers should give more attention to Arts students during grammar instruction at secondary school level.
